Refounding Martin Luther King, Glenn Beck Style
Yesterday, Glenn Beck compared himself to MLK. But, this isn’t the only example of Glenn Beck bastardizing memory of MLK. Glenn Beck has also snuck MLK into his the refounders graphic/ logo/collage.
Glenn Beck launched the Refounders on 9/12. Since 9/12 was ending, I guess he needed another gimmick to keep his show on the road. After characterizing government as diseased, Glenn Beck described the refounders:
So what do we do? We stop spreading the disease. It’s time to reconnect with our founding principles. Fifty-six men signed the original documents that every American patriot still believes in with all their heart over 200 years later. Fifty-six men changed the world forever.
[...]
I had this idea the other night, while reading Thomas Jefferson. Let’s begin the search for the 56 men and women who help us re-found America: Patriots, “refounders” willing to put their nation ahead of themselves and their party affiliation.
The logo for this project is what Glenn Beck snuck MLK’s picture into.I am very confident that MLK would not have been a member of Glenn Beck’s refounders. You see, the refounders have given up on the process of this government entirely. They walked away from the table of democratic discourse, instead opting for the petulant approach to refound or start the whole thing from scratch all because they can’t have their way right now.
No, MLK would not have been a member of such an organization – history tells us so.
Glenn Beck has really been pushing the MLK imagery lately. Aside from comparing himself to MLK, he recently announced that he’ll be holding a rally at the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of MLK’s I Have a Dream speech. And, in the lead up to the 9/12 rally, Glenn Beck consistently compared tea party protestors to black civil rights activists with warnings that the government was going to shoot them with fire hoses or release dogs on them (none of which happened to the teaparty protesters, of course.)
Further, Glenn Beck’s history of racially inflammatory statements add insult to the injury that Beck oft attempts to inflict on MLK’s memory. To put it simply, Glenn Beck should remove MLK from the refounders logo. He won’t, of course. But, this should harden our resolve to contact his few remaining sponsors in order to hold him accountable for preying on racial anxiety and denigrating the memory of true civil rights champion.
Here are screenshots from the opening sequence of his show featuring the refounders logo:

Becky Boy takes no responsibility for his actions. There are people who take “refounding” seriously, and feel the government should be overthrown. I monitor the rightist blogs/forums and find their angst is growing proportionately to Beck’s nonstop propaganda. His rants have little basis in historical facts and full of inaccuracies, which of course, advances his populist agenda to rouse the rabble. He will use anyone, and his latest meme is “blacks as conservatives and victims of progressives”, which I find insulting. Yet, Fox continues to give this cretin a platform, which is ironically, not the least bit patriotic.

Glenn Beck is totally sullying the name and the mission of MLK and the civil rights movement in general.

Fuck you Jane, wait a minute, thats right your an ugly liberal, the only person who would fuck you would be a recently paroled felon who would be willing to do a kitchen sink if he could. You stupid liberal bitch.

So Joe, are you going to say anything on the topic here, or are you just going to spread hate speech without any explanation? The point here is Glenn Beck, not Jane.
I do struggle with injecting MLK here…you really can’t compare the civil rights movement to what’s going on now.

In my opinion, a majority of liberals are very arrogant. They choose to what THEY think is the best for the people because they assume they know better them. When they can instead choose what THE PEOPLE think is best for THE PEOPLE.
First they tried to use “political correctness” to pass an unread 2,500 page health care bill in the senate (using children in commercials etc.).
When that didn’t work, next they started using “advanced vocabulary” and “powerful psycology” to make themselves sound smart and rationalize the bill with good rhetoric.
Thank You Scott Brown!!!
A lot of times democrats will say things like “conservatives are unintelligent” etc. But what they don’t know is that we conservatives could easily persuade people in the same way by using “big words”, skepticism, and rhetoric intelligence if we wanted to. We won’t, we value presenting matters in a down to earth fashion using common sense that relates to everyone, even children. Obviously, this is much more trustable than arrogant people behind closed doors.

Ok, first thanks joe or making it hard to defend conservatism. I doubt you are a conservative or that you truly understand what one is. Now, Jane so you decide to spot some things about Glenn Beck. So what right wing blogs are you following? I follow a great many and have never seen any of them calling for the over throw of the Government. If you watched Glenn with an open mind you would see that he is not calling for the overthrow of the Gov. with the re founding, but he is calling for a return to the principles that our system was founded on. Now how is that over throw. Now one final question, you spout the usual junk of the left stating that Glenn’s show is riddled with inaccurate information so if you are so incline prove it. watch his shows or any show from the last year and list the historical inaccuracies and back them up with proof.

4426 members?? I think you might get more at a tea party in Podunk. I did notice that the conservatives posted their full name while the Progressives seem somewhat ashamed and secretive. Still, all in all 4426 is probably a lot more than what can stomach Keith and Rach.

Oh and MLK stole the “I have a dream speech from the 1952 REPUBLICAN National Committe – how sad is that? MLK also stole his docturial from another and got caught! Same spelling and gramaerical errors. WHY did he graduate? The same reason of all the self segragating BIGOTS allowing themselves to be something or something dash Americans!

First off: Angelo, I think what you are doing is incredible. And it must be working because it seems like the comment section is full of Conservatives trying to bash the first person who posts a comment (Daniel Lay, you don’t fall under the “bashing” category). Jane never said what side she’s on. Calm down.
Second: I think what the American people need to do now more than ever is realize that BOTH sides have made mistakes. While I support President Obama, there are always ways that our government can improve. Having the American people attack each other with insulting comments, threats, lies, etc. is NOT helping. Do I disagree with most Conservative views? Yes. But I would never sit on the internet and log onto websites to attack them.
I despise the words Glenn Beck spews on a daily basis. I disagree with him and I do believe he uses fear and lies to rile Tea parties up. I do not believe he should be allowed to spread lies on public television. I am not trying to repress his freedom of speech. He can have his radio show. It just terrifies me to watch him on television and listen to his hate.
This movement isn’t called Stop Conservatives, it’s called Stop Beck.
And finally, it makes me sick that someone like Beck would put MLK’s face on anything of his. If he hadn’t made racist comments in the past, I would be somewhat OK with it. Not only has Beck made insulting comments, but I have to agree with Angelo as far as MLK not falling under the “refounders” category.

While I agree with the sentiment of your post and most of it. I think this one part is unfair. The idea of turning your back on a govt that has failed and starting over from scratch with a paradigm that was unimagineable before you try.. this is how america was founded. I mean you could never think it was possible to turn you back on the king and set up your own government and yet that’s what ‘we’ (USA) did.
Now I don’t think the US Govt needs to be overthrown obviously but when you say it like you have, you make it seem like it’s something that hasn’t happened before.
Personally I think this whole issue is more like a freedom fighter vs terrorist thing. I mean who wouldn’t want to see themselves as MLK-like. In the end it’s the winner who gets to decide. I got no beef with the man using MLK’s image. I mean it’s a public face. The fact that he’s bat**** crazy for thinking they’re anything alike is perfectly his right. If he’s trying to deny it because he knows he’s being an idiot then that’s where we have an issue.

LOLZ you don't even know what she looks like, you idiot. I love how the most brilliant defense you can throw her is based on physical appearances, and the fact that no one would want to “fuck” her. You clearly show your brains and education well. You sound like a 13 year-old. Get a life.

unfortunatly you just dont get it do you? how is this harming mlk or his memory? the left is taking away our civil rights not the right.

He's such a dick. He understands nothing of what MLK stood for. He understands nothing. At all.

Wow- you have certainly proved everyone wrong about Glenn Beck. He doesn't encourage hate speech. He has obviously encouraged thoughtful debate based on facts, instead of ad hominen attacks and vicious personal insults. Thank you for providing an example of Glenn Beck's style of political debate. Your message, as his always is, is clearly relevant to the real world issues we face today.
Again, thanks for the great example of Glenn Beck-style debate!

What, exactly, has been done to estrange us from what our country “was founded on”? What is specifically causing the need to be re-founded? Seriously. And has (whatever it is) been going on only in the last 2 years? Seriously, I hear this so much, but with no specifics.

You are the sad pathetic one who does not get it. The right wing is in your bedroom, in your affairs, telling you you must be christian, telling woman they cannot choose, telling gay people they are second class citizens, and the list goes on. Please tell me which 'right' has been stripped from YOU personally because of the left? ZERO, none…why? Becaues it is your tactic to call out the other side in this case the left for things that YOU are actually doing. Fox does it, Beck does it, the republicans do it. An imagined victim complex. Grow up Tyler.
