On February 7, 2011, just before 1 year anniversary of Beck’s UK broadcast running sponsor-less, a small amount of ads returned. Consequently, along with the StopBeck UK effort, participants in the StopBeck effort sprang to action. We contacted advertisers and kindly requested that the follow the responsible action taken by hundreds of other companies and refrain from financially supporting Glenn Beck’s vitriol.

In short order, advertisers quickly fled Glenn Beck’s UK broadcast again. On February 18, 2011, Glenn Beck’s UK broadcast resumed running without advertisements. It has remained ad-free since (Fox News’ little trouble with daylight savings time aside). Additionally, the StopBeck effort has confirmed that UK advertisers were informed that advertising slots during Beck’s program would no longer be sold to anyone. In other words, that the ads are back off.

It may not have been consecutive, but Beck’s UK broadcast has now run for more than a year without advertisements. Glenn Beck’s lost advertisers at home and abroad represent real financial consequences for Fox News.

Great work all!

Onward we go…

—-

Video of a commercial break for Glenn Beck’s show in the UK compared with another Fox News show broadcast in the UK. You’ll see that Glenn Beck’s show is no longer runs paid advertisements, whereas other Fox News Channel shows in the UK continue to have paid ads:

Well, your efforts paid off!

In a statement sent to the StopBeck effort, Match.com confirmed they were removing their ads from Glenn Beck’s show:

I have reached out to our agency. Match runs on FOX News but doesn’t purposefully run in that particular programming. We will put in a request to not be aired during the [Glenn Beck] programming.

Great work all!

Onward we go…

Of note:

Well over 300 companies refuse to advertise on Glenn Beck’s program.

The UK broadcast of Glenn Beck’s show has run for over a year without paid advertisements due to your efforts.

Despite concerns expressed by multiple interests groups as well as Fox News’ own sponsors, Fox News refuses to get the message. Roger Ailes (head of Fox News) and Rupert Murdoch have yet to deliver accountability for Glenn Beck’s reckless vitriol and willful deceit.

We’ve recently started reaching out to Glenn Beck’s radio advertisers.

Columbia College (Missouri) was advertising on Glenn Beck’s radio show in Chicago, which is broadcast by Salem Communications’ AM 560 WIND.

As with television advertisers, participants in the StopBeck effort reached out to Columbia College. We kindly requested that they take the responsible action by refraining from financially supporting Glenn Beck’s vitriol.

In a statement sent to the StopBeck effort, Columbia College’s marketing communications partner confirmed they were removing ads from Glenn Beck’s radio program (emphasis added):

The previous media buying company did purchase time on the station on behalf of Columbia College. However, it needs to be noted that he bought commercial time on a broad rotating basis that could run from 9 am to 5 pm. He did not specifically buy the Glenn Beck program. Because of the rotation of the Columbia spots, some of our messages ended up in the Beck show. We were not sponsors of the program in any way and did not specifically buy his program.

To address this situation in the future, we have instructed the station not to run any Columbia College spots during the Beck program. It is our policy to avoid controversial radio and television programs for our clients where listeners and viewers might be offended.

Be assured that Columbia College did not intentionally buy the Glenn Beck program in the past as it was part of a commercial rotation.

Glenn Beck’s radio show is currently off the air in 3 cities – New York City, Philadelphia and Madison. Madison’s WTDY explained that they dropped Beck in part because “[t]he lack of actual content becomes more apparent daily.” New York’s WOR reportedly dropped Beck due to low ratings.

Further, thanks to Jewish Funds for Justice’s terrific work, 5 New York City radio stations have already committed to keeping Glenn Beck off the air there. Unfortunately, two New York City radio stations are holding out and have yet to agree to refrain from picking up Glenn Beck. Both of the hold out stations are owned by Salem Communications.

Maybe this latest advertiser drop at Salem’s Chicago affiliate will help them understand that Glenn Beck’s reckless vitriol is bad for business – a fact that even Fox News seems to be coming to terms with.

Anyway, great work all!

Onward!

—–

Of note…

More than 300 advertisers are currently boycotting Glenn Beck’s Fox News show – and the list continues to grow to this day.

The UK broadcast of his show has run for over a year without any commercials due to Glenn Beck’s ad losses there.

But, on February 7, 2011, a small amount of ads returned to Glenn Beck’s UK broadcast. Drats! Just before we were about to make our 1 year ad-free announcement too.

On February 9, 2011, Associated British Foods ads ran during Glenn Beck’s UK broadcast. ABF is global food, ingredients and retail company. For some of the brands that they operate, see graphic at the bottom of this post.

As with other advertisers, participants in the StopBeck effort promptly reached out to ABF. We kindly requested that they follow the responsible action of hundreds of other advertisers and refrain from advertising on Glenn Beck’s show.

In a statement sent to the StopBeck effort, Associated British Foods confirmed that they would no longer be advertising on Glenn Beck’s show. They advised that they took proactive measures to avoid Glenn Beck’s program last year and suggest that the most recent ads ran due to some type of mix up with Sky.

Associated British Food’s statement:

We were aware of the issue with this particular show last year and as a result removed all ABF advertising.

In response to a number of complaints about the shows content, Sky took the decision to remove all minutage in the show. However, from 01 Jan 11 Sky’s scheduling team re-instated the minutage and did not alert us to this change.

We have since spoken to Sky and as a result of this minutage in this show will be removed from now on, therefore ensuring that ABF advertising will not appear in or be associated with the Beck content.

Your tweets and emails do matter. Many thanks for your continued participation in this accountability effort.

Special thanks to the StopBeck UK effort for their ever watchful eyes.

Onward we go…

—–

For your reference, here are some ABF brands:

On February 9, 2011, Lloyds TSB ads rand during Glenn Beck’s UK broadcast. Lloyd’s is one of big four banks in the UK.

Perhaps the return of ads is a pitiable attempt to thwart our celebration?

Jordans’ ads were among the small number of ads that returned to Glenn Beck’s UK broadcast. Jordans is a company that makes cereals and cereal bars; it is the UK’s fourth largest cereal manufacturer.

As with other advertisers, participants in the StopBeck effort promptly reached out to Halifax. We kindly requested that they follow the responsible action of hundreds of other advertisers and refrain from advertising on Glenn Beck’s show.

In communications with the StopBeck effort, Jordans suggests that the ad was run in error. But, they confirm that they have taken corrective action to ensure that their ads no longer run during Glenn Beck’s show.

Notably, Jordans also advised that they decided not to advertise on Fox News. Here’s what their spokesperson had to say:

I have confirmed with our Media agency that we made the decision last year not to advertise on Fox News and this was passed to Sky as part of our agreement with them. Unfortunately, from 01 Jan 11 Sky’s scheduling team re-instated the advertising and did not alert us to this change.

We have since spoken to Sky and because of this; advertising in this show will be removed from now on.
